What makes life fulfilling?
The verse for today: “Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done and on the labor in which I had toiled; and indeed all was vanity and grasping for the wind. There was no profit under the sun.” - Ecclesiastes 2:11.
What makes your life fulfilling?
Listen to what Tom Brady said in 2005 during a 60 Minutes interview with Steve Kroft. “Why do I have 3 Super Bowl Rings and still think there’s something greater out there for me? Maybe people would think, hey man, this is what it is; I’ve reached my goal, my dream, my life. Me? I think, God, there’s got to be more than this?”
Steve Kroft: “What’s the answer?”
Brady: “I wish I knew. I wish I knew.”
King Solomon, the writer of Ecclesiastes, was a man who had it all – wisdom, riches and power. But despite all that he had, he was still empty on the inside. There was a void in his life. He concludes that there is “no profit under the sun,” which means that living life on earth without God is worthless, because you can’t keep what you have achieved. We lose it all when we die. Therefore, it’s all “vanity” – meaningless.
Solomon concludes his book by writing, “Fear God and keep His commandments for this is everyone’s duty.” (Ecclesiastes 12:13)
That sounds depressing, especially when you consider that we’re not able to keep the Ten Commandments. We’ve all sinned.
Mr. Brady, there IS more than this life. Jesus Christ offers eternal life. He said, I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.” (John 10:28).
Jesus also said, “I have come that they may have life and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10).
Abundant life, is not found in what we have or what we do. It’s found in Who we know – a restored relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
How? By faith. Jesus said, “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.” (John 5:24).
