I echo Walsh’s sentiments. However, he lumps all Christians into one category. The word, Christian, means “follower of Christ.” Unfortunately, there are many kinds of people who call themselves Christians who are NOT following Christ.

1. Carnal Christians — Also known as “worldly Christians.” These people are not spiritually mature. They are spiritual babies. They know the gospel but they have not grown spiritually. They are controlled by their flesh, meaning they are driven by their sinful nature. 1 Corinthians 3:3 says, “For you are still controlled by your sinful nature. You are jealous of one another and quarrel with each other. Doesn’t that prove you are controlled by your sinful nature? Aren’t you living like people of the world?” Carnal Christians are easily deceived because they have a superficial knowledge of the word of God.

2. Cultural Christians — These people are unbelievers. They like some of the teachings of Jesus but not the doctrine of sin, repentance or salvation. Atheistic scientist Richard Dawkins calls himself a “cultural Christian” because he admires some of the principles and philanthropic aspects of Christianity. But he is not a born-again Christian.
