Did former Speaker Kevin McCarthy sucker punch or an accidental bump Tennessee Republican Rep. Tim Burchett in the back? Burchett calls McCarthy a bully.

Then in the middle of a Senate committee hearing, Oklahoma Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin stood up and threatened to fight Teamsters President Sean M. O’Brien. They didn’t trade punches but later they traded barbs on X.

Congress is getting in touch with its juvenile side this week.

SPIRITUAL APPLICATION

Ephesians 4:26-27 says, ““Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 nor give place to the devil.”

What makes you angry? How do your express your anger?

Everyone gets angry from time to time. But if you don’t control it, it will control you. Harboring anger can “give the devil a foothold” which is spiritual bondage.

The late pastor and author Adrian Rogers said, “Repressed anger is compared to lighting rags on fire in a waste basket and putting it in a closet. It may burn itself out or it may burn the house down.”

Our emotions, like anger, can lead us to sin and sin brings forth death (James 1:15). When we sin, something dies: Sin kills marriage relationships, sin kills your relationship with your family, sin kills your testimony, sin kills your reputation, sin kills your opportunities, sin kills your career, sin kills your health and your future.

The consequences of sin can destroy everything you value. Christ-followers are called to live by a higher standard. How? Well, first of all: repent of your evil thoughts give your anger to God (Acts 8:22-23). Pray and ask God to change your heart.

Former NFL Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy once said, “When people ask me, "How do you stay so calm on the sideline?" I have to tell them it is Christian maturity and Christ working in me. It's not natural. It didn't happen overnight. It was a process. I know how powerful God's spirit is.”

Lashing out in anger is natural. Controlling anger is ‘supernatural.’ And only supernatural power comes from God
