“When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me. Speaking words of wisdom, ‘Let it be.’” — Paul McCartney and John Lennon.
Paul McCartney said that the inspiration for “Let It Be” came in a dream of his deceased mother. He said that he had been under a lot of stress and in his dream his mother told him to “Let it be.” What McCartney didn’t know was that the words, “Let it be” were spoken by the Virgin Mary in Luke 1.
According the King James Version, when God chose Mary to the mother of Jesus the Messiah, she said in Luke 1:38, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.”
Consider how much stress this young girl would have experienced.
Confusion: Why me? Why now? And how could I be pregnant when I hadn’t been with a man?
Embarrassment: Family, friends and neighbors would assume that she had been unfaithful before marriage. Such a moral failure would have been devastating. Who would believe her story of this immaculate conception by the Holy Spirit?
Fear: According to Old Testament law, she could have been stoned to death for adultery. But she trusted God more than the culture.
Plans: This pregnancy would completely disrupt her plans for her future. But God’s plans are always better, even in difficult circumstances.
Yes, Mary must have been under a lot of stress, but in the midst of her problems, she listened to God and not the world. She chose to “Let it be unto me according to Your word.”
Who do you listen to when your life is disrupted? Who do you go to for advice?
The voice you listen to will be the one you worship and obey. Women today who are facing a crisis pregnancy, can either listen to Planned Parenthood, which is the voice of the devil who will encourage them to kill their baby. Or they can listen God and follow Mary’s example of bravery by trusting God and sacrificially loving her baby by carrying it until birth. And if they can’t afford to keep their baby, adoption is the bravest act of love. Women who listen to God’s voice, will be able to rejoice like Mary when she said in Luke 1:46-47, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.”
The greatest blessings are often wrapped in disruptions and difficulties. So if you find yourself in times of trouble, I’m speaking words of wisdom, “Let it be.”
