ARCHIVE 2014: Welcome to Humility Month. It’s the time of year when we weep for America, confess our national sins before our Creator, ask for a spiritual revival and pray for His mercy .
The Bible says, “…God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.” (1 Peter 5:5-6)
The cartoon (above) was drawn after a lower court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage. The following year, the Supreme Court made it a new right and erased the definition of marriage.
Today, marriage is whatever people imagine. Polygamy, polyamory, two, three, four or more in a marriage was always the next logical step. National Review’s Madeleine Kearns writes about it here. And The Federalist, Jonathan S Tobin writes about it here.
Deuteronomy 22:5 says, "A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the Lord your God detests anyone who does this."
Since God is sovereign over all creation what happens when a nation’s sins reach to heaven?
In 1787, George Mason said, “As nations cannot be rewarded or punished in the next world they must be in this. By an inevitable chain of causes & effects providence punishes national sins, by national calamities.”
Mason’s concern should be ours today. Even unbelievers notice that things have radically changed and not for the better. That is why we should call this Humility Month, not pride.
I’m rerunning this cartoon because some people had a problem with me drawing a cartoon of the President’s latest fall and equating it with his age. That’s my job.
News Flash: Everyone falls. I’ve fallen many times through my life. Last year, I fell running to first base in a men’s fast pitch game. Bruce Springsteen fell recently climbing onstage at a concert. But I didn’t draw a cartoon about it. Do you know why?
Because if I fall or if a rock ‘n roll star falls, it’s no big deal because we’re not the President of the United States. We have no political power to affect anyone’s life. We can’t open our borders to fentanyl, drug traffickers and foreign nationals. We can’t shutdown oil pipelines and promise to end fossil fuels thus putting American energy companies out of business. We can’t raise the national debt ceiling adding trillions in reckless spending or get us into senseless wars.
On the other hand, when an octogenarian with cognitive issues, who has difficulty enunciating words, speaking in complete sentences, loses his train of thought, shakes hands with imaginary people and has his finger on the nuclear button in the oval office… people begin to wonder if he is up to the job. And as a political cartoonist, I CANNOT ignore it.
I remember how the Saturday Night Live mocked President Gerald Ford for falling down. But this is different and even Democrats are concerned that Biden is losing it.
The sandbag in my cartoon, for those who didn’t understand, was analogous to the “age concerns” that may be tripping up our Commander-in-Chief’s 2024 campaign. Those concerns go far beyond his frequent trips (pun intended). And I’m not the only one voicing them.
WURMBRAND EPILOGUE
Yesterday, I wrote about Richard Wurmbrand, founder of Voice of the Martyrs. He wrote 18 books in English and others in Romanian. In 1967, he wrote his best-known book, which was produced into a 2018 movie by the same name: Tortured for Christ. Click the link to watch.
In 2021, Voice of the Martyrs also produced a movie based on the life of Wurmbrand’s wife called, Sabina: Tortured for Christ, The Nazi Years.
Here is a link to a 1989 TV interview with the Wurmbrands.
In several of Wurmbrand’s books, he wrote very boldly and emphatically against Communism. But he maintained a hope and compassion even for his torturers by "looking at men ... not as they are, but as they will be ... I could also see in our persecutors. a future Apostle Paul ... [and] the jailer in Philippi who became a convert.”
That is the definition of seeing the world through the eyes of Jesus. Seeing the potential in ungodly people, even people torturing you, with a vision of what they could be. That is the definition of Christian maturity.
Romans 8:29 says, “For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son” The Wurmbrands personified
