Does this look fair to you?
ARCHIVE 2000: To commemorate Holy Week, I’m rerunning my gospel cartoon.
HOLY WEEK
“…They pierced My hands and My feet; I can count all My bones. They look and stare at Me. They divide My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.” - Psalm 22:16-18.
When Jesus cried out on the cross, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” He was quoting the first verse of Psalm 22.
King David wrote that Psalm 1000 years before Jesus was born and 500 years before the Romans invented crucifixion as a method of execution. Think about that. Can you predict something that will happen 1000 years from now with exact detail?
Psalm 22 clearly describes the crucifixion of Jesus – “they pierced My hands and feet” (John 19:37). Jesus’ bones were out of joint but not broken (John 19:33). Jesus’ garments were divided among the soldiers but they cast lots (rolled the dice) for His cloak because it had no seems (John 19:24).
Unbelievers have claimed that Jesus knowingly did things to fulfill Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah. But many of those prophecies were performed by other people.
For instance, Judas betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver (Matthew 26:15) which was the amount for the burial of a slave. After Jesus was crucified, Judas was filled with guilt for betraying him, so he threw the silver into the Temple. The Priests couldn’t keep it because it was blood money so they used it to purchase a Potter’s field (graveyard).
Six hundred years before Jesus was born, Zechariah wrote, “So they counted out for my wages thirty pieces of silver. And the LORD said to me, “Throw it to the potter ”—this magnificent sum (sarcasm) at which they valued me! So I took the thirty coins and threw them to the potter in the Temple of the LORD.” (Zechariah 11:12-13)
God did not make the people mock Jesus, crucify Jesus and gamble for His cloak. God doesn’t cause anyone to sin (James 1:13). But God, who knows the hearts of men, put these people in positions of power to do what He knew they would do (John 19:11).
For me personally, the greatest proof that the Bible is true is fulfilled prophecy. And as Christian author and apologist, Josh McDowell has said, this is “evidence that demands a verdict.” Everyone must decide to either trust in Jesus or not. There is no avoiding this decision.
As the late Pastor Don Tyler used to say, “a ‘no decision’ is a ’NO’ decision.” If you don’t know for sure that when you die that you will go to heaven, I urge you to trust in Jesus. Today is the day of salvation.
