Gary Varvel: Presidential race interference
My essay on what happens when you curse God's chosen
I know that many of my subscribers can’t stand former President Donald Trump and many of you support him. Despite your feelings, the Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron’s decision to fine Trump for $350+ million for a case that has no victims, appears to this cartoonist to be nothing but election interference.
New York Attorney General Letitia James, who campaigned for office by saying she was going to get Trump, boasted after the decision that with pre-judgment interest, the judgment totals over $450 million, an amount “which will continue to increase every single day” until the judgment is paid.
Look, none of this would be happening if Trump hadn’t announced that he was running for re-election.

But the left knows that their own president is failing and his policies have born some rotten fruit. So their only hope to win re-election is to use lawfare to keep Trump off of the ballot. They are afraid to entrust the election to the voters. Remember 2016?
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) tried to calm the concerns of business owners on Sunday. “…Business people have nothing to worry about, because they’re very different than Donald Trump and his behavior,” Hochul said.
Behavior? So as long as a business owner’s behavior is acceptable to the democrats, business owners have nothing to fear. Where are we, Nazi Germany?
Oh, and there has been a ripple effect to Engoron’s decision. Truckers supporting Trump are refusing to deliver to the Big Apple. They are protesting what they see is an unfair judgment. They are warning that their boycott could paralyze New York City — as more drivers vow to join them.

GOD WILL NOT BE MOCKED
In December, 2023, I linked to a video of Hasan Bitmez, a 53-year-old Turkish lawmaker who cursed Israel during a speech in Turkey’s Parliament. He said Israel would face "the wrath of Allah.” Immediately after finishing his speech, he suffered a heart attack and collapsed. He died later at a hospital.
Did God stop Bitmez’s heart because he cursed Israel? I don’t know but, the timing is curious, don’t you think?
Genesis 12:3 says, “I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”
The nations that cursed Israel in the past, didn’t fare very well. Babylon was once a world empire but is nonexistent today. Egypt, the Roman empire and Germany are a shadow of what they once were.
God is long-suffering but the Old and New Testaments have a few examples of God’s instant judgment of sinful behavior.
In Numbers 16, we read about a man named Korah who gathered 250 other men to challenge Moses’ authority after the Exodus from Egypt. God had chosen Moses to lead the nation of Israel, but Korah thought he could do better. Korah’s rebellion was not just against Moses, but against God. So God opened up the earth and swallowed up Korah, his family, and all their possessions. Then “fire came out from the LORD” and consumed the other 250 men who joined Korah’s rebellion. The next day, the people blamed Moses and his brother Aaron for the deaths Korah and the rebels. Then God sent a plague on the grumblers and 14,700 people died.
In Acts 5:1-11 we read a chilling account of Ananias and Sapphire who were struck dead by God after they were caught in a lie. Peter told them they had lied to the Holy Spirit and they both dropped dead in front of Peter. Their deaths had a purifying effect on the first church. They were reminded about how serious sin is to God. “The wages of sin is death…” (Romans 6:23)
Thankfully, we live in a day of God’s grace and He is patient with us. Otherwise, we’d all be dead.
But the point is, Bitmez’s death reminds us that it’s not out of character for God to give us a glimpse of His sovereign control over life and death from time to time.
This is not to say that everyone who dies suddenly has been judged by God. All I’m saying is, God promised that He would curse those who cursed Israel and Bitmez publicly cursed Israel.
Since Israel was attacked on October 7th, large numbers of people around the world have cursed Israel and marched in anti-semitic demonstrations. Their lives have been preserved but they may be judged in other ways unless they repent.
It’s especially troubling to see college students in America protesting Israel. I realize they are doing it in ignorance of what the Bible says. But Galatians makes it very clear:
“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.” - Galatians 6:7
One reason America has been blessed by God is because we have blessed Israel. Despite that fact that most Israelis are secular (non-religious) people, God still has his plan to redeem them. You can read about this in my essay series about Israel (below). But if Biden continues to press Israel to accept a two-state solution, I fear that we will face a worse judgment that having to endure the Biden “you know, the thing.”
In 1787, George Mason said, “As nations cannot be rewarded or punished in the next world they must be in this. By an inevitable chain of causes & effects providence punishes national sins, by national calamities.” This is why we need to pray for America to repent before it’s too late.

This is much more than two tiered Justice …. This is hands down a political hit job by corrupt DAs and partisan judges in die hard Democrats states. I lived in NYC metro NJ for 20 years… actually, in the town next to Tony Sopranos white manse. I never watched The Sopranos, why should I when I was surrounded by slightly diluted versions of these characters. My point being, this Judge had this miscarriage of Justice planned well before the grand jury met. Almost as if the whole thing was reverse engineered… Engeron fully understands that when there is no victim, when the banks have done their due diligence, there is no fraud. And if there was a plaintiff, the defendant would be the lender not the developer. This is SOP in the real estate development business, especially NYC, so Hochul’s assuring comments are especially offensive. She’s complicit in this political hit job. This is not about hating Trump, this is about about condoning this miscarriage of Justice with your silence.
